Cathryn Herbert should have been in New Zealand this week, competing at the cancelled Oceania Championships as part of the Australian Senior Team, but instead she kept her name firmly in front of the selectors’ eyes, winning the CCN4*-S at the REC Equine Specialists Sydney Autumn Classic.
Riding the 15-year-old stallion Wimborne Constable, Cathryn stormed around today’s cross country course which, despite being a national CCN rather than CCI, presented plenty of good questions for the riders, some who will be heading to Adelaide next month
The class was packed with big names, including Shane Rose on five horses, but Cathryn produced the fastest cross country round of the class, adding just 0.4 penalties to their dressage and show jumping score from Saturday of 27.9, to take the win on 28.3
Shane, who had led after the first two phases on Easy Turn and was in equal second place (with Cathryn) riding Virgil, added 6.8 time penalties on Virgil for second place (34.70) and 14 time penalties on Easy Turn for third (41.0)
However, Shane did take home a rug this weekend with The Bandit winning the Horseland Dural CCN2* while Jess Somerfield won the CCN3* riding Finch Farm Carpenteria, a horse with quite a background story that we’ll tell you all about in our full wrap up, coming soon
