As if on cue, the rain magically appeared for the first day of eventing in Australia since the Covid-19 lockdown
Victorian eventing riders (back in Phase 3 lockdown and unlikely to get much action for a couple of months) are probably a little envious of NSW riders able to compete at this weekend’s Denman Horse Trials, but they may feel a bit better knowing that it was wet, wet, wet up there for the first day of competition
Denman Horse Trials is the first post-Covid eventing competition to be held in Australia and, whilst scrupulously following all necessary precautions, they are hopeful of a smooth transition back to the ‘new norm’ this weekend
It started well for the event organiser Gordon Bishop, who led the Lake Macquarie Designer Kitchens CCN1*-S on board Henry Muggins with a score of 29.60 in this afternoon’s soggy dressage but it was Craig Barrett that took the lead after show jumping on board Eligo, staying on their dressage score of 31.10.
However Emma Mason, back eventing after having her baby, is in second place and very close behind on 31.30, also with a clear round on Hebrides
Gordon is now in third place on 33.60 so it will be a tight finish on tomorrow’s cross country. Let’s just hope it is a drier one and keep an eye out for this woman ...
