The Adult Riding Club movement is a strong one in Victoria, Australia and this year the Horse Riding Club Association of Victoria (HRCAV) celebrates its 40th year.
With over 250 clubs and 5,000 members throughout Victoria, and extending over the borders into South Australia and NSW, the HRCAV caters for beginner riders right through to experienced competitors, providing competition opportunities in various disciplines.
The highlight of the year for many is the Top Teams Trophy (TTT) in various disciplines, where teams of three or four riders compete at their own level with points earned for placings added to their team score. The BetaVet HRCAV Top Teams Trophy Horse Trials 2023 took place at Greenvale, near Melbourne on 20th and 21st May, as traditionally the winning team each year hosts the following year’s event and in 2023, this fell to Bulla Adult Riding Club, whose base is at Greenvale Equestrian Centre.
As well as being a hard-fought competition, there is always plenty of fun to be had and competitors have a keen sense of humour when naming their teams.
The eventual team winners were “Two Talls and a Short” comprising Tania Harding riding the off the track thoroughbred The Rookie, Regina Knobel riding Hillview Park Denman Keikari, Liz Koschitzke - Gundowring Cosmo and Eloise Cluning riding Shadow Quest taking the honours (yes, we know that’s four riders, but, hey, we didn’t name the team!)
Tania of course is no slouch when it comes to competing, having had the lovely Jirrima Yorkshire at top international levels – will we get to see The Rookie competing at 4* in the future? We hope so!
Runners-up in the team competition was ‘Kg Girth Control’ consisting of Madeleine Manton riding Wyann Mercedes, Sue McLennan riding Kalazan, Jess Francis riding Shangani Patrol and Arty Brennan on GYP while the ‘Leg-less’ team took third place.
