Little and large at Tonimbuk EvA80

Linda Williams and Burrowa Dewy, winners of the EvA80A

Linda Williams is well known for riding big horses – her 2* horse Linbil White Russian is a large buckskin cross of warmblood and Clydesdale and she also used to ride the big grey stallion Grande Farnese but at Tonimbuk last weekend she had a change of pace in the EvA80 and a change of height

It worked well with the two Welsh ponies Burrowa Dewy winning the Delwyn Ogilvy Equestrian EvA80A and Linbil Orbit winning the Essential Equine Veterinary EvA80C.

Burrowa Dewey won by quite a margin on their dressage score of 33.80 ahead of Jessie Fleming and Harry Luxmoore but it was a bit more of a tussle in the EvA80C.

David Prior on Highfield Lude Latte was neck and neck all the way with Linda in this class and they both finished on a score of 41.30 but Linda won on a count back. David was slightly ahead in the dressage by just one penalty but he lost that advantage in the show jumping when he picked up one time penalty – so close but so far!

On the other end of the scale Catherine Davies and her big homebred mare Graftango won the Dancing Horse EvA80B. This their second win in a row, having taken a rug at Geelong Horse Trials and it looks as if Catherine has a real young star on her hands here – definitely one to watch for the future.

Rosemarie Hazard-Ellis finished 10th in the EvA80C on her lovely coloured Eskimo Pie, adding just 3.6 time penalties

“Fence 2 was a dark coloured house-style fence so maybe the colour put some horses off but we didn’t have any problem” said Ros “The only one Eski had a look at was the trakehner at Fence 12 – that was a bit spooky but I was ready with a little tap of the whip and he was fine. It was also a bit off the track so you had to make sure not to miss it”

Indeed two riders did miss it prompting Andrea Kellett, the mother of course designer Ewan, to wonder

“Does no-one teach riders at this level to count their fences as they are jumping?”

Food for thought ....
