In 1992 the first equestrian event hosted by Coonabarabran High School was ‘overwhelmed’ by its response to the flatwork and showjumping classes held as part of the school’s AgExpo, with just 100 competitors that year
Since then, it has gone from strength to strength with the now-named North West Equestrian Expo the largest High School Equestrian Event in Australia attracting over 400 competitors across multiple disciplines
The 31st North West Expo takes place this week from 2nd – 4th June in Coonabarabran, about 350km south-west of Sydney in a rural area known for its wheat and sheep farming. But during Expo Week, the town’s population of 2,500 doubles in size as the riders aged from 7-17 and their families and friends roll into town, making it a highlight of the area’s calendar.
The program caters for riders of all abilities and experience in most of the competitions with graded Eventing, Combined Training, Showjumping, Dressage and Polocrosse.
“The standard at the top level of all disciplines is extremely high with some riders going on to represent Australia in their chosen field after school” say the organisers and indeed we know of one 5* rider, Gemma Tinney, daughter of Olympic medallist, Stuart Tinney, who competed here during her school days for many years.
The eventing competition takes place from Friday 2nd – Sunday 4th June with classes at CCN1*, EvA95, EvA80 and EvA65 levels and the Salmonidae (Mackie) ODE Trophy awarded to the highest scoring team of three students from the same school in the One Day Event.
