After a couple of weeks’ focus on Victoria with Tonimbuk and Wandin International, Australia’s international eventing competition heads further north to Tamworth, NSW this week.
The impressive Australian Equine and Livestock Events Centre (AELEC), set on a 72 hectare property that boasts 478 permanent stables, the largest Ebb & Flow arena in the Southern Hemisphere and a host of other facilities as part of the $28 million facility opened in 2009, is a unique eventing venue.
Located in one of Australia’s biggest ‘horsey areas’, it is not surprising that the venue attracts plenty of keen eventers and this weekend sees over 400 competitors taking part in classes from EvA50 to CCI4*-S.
Dressage for all classes takes place on Saturday with show jumping for the EvA65 and EvA50 on Saturday afternoon and the CCI3* and CCI4* classes taking to the massive floodlit Ebb and Flow arena for show jumping in the late afternoon/early evening.
The EvA95 and EvA80 also head out on cross country courses designed by Sharmayne Spencer (EvA50 to CCN1*) on Saturday while all other classes tackle the cross country on Sunday, with the 2*, 3* and 4* courses designed by Grant Johnstone.
Andrew Cooper rides Hey Arnold to a CI4* win at Tamborine
20 combinations are entered for the Double R CCI4*-S, including the recent CCN4*-S winner at the Sydney Eventing Autumn Classic, Cathryn Herbert riding Wimborne Constable, Andrew Cooper making the journey from Queensland with four horses including Hey Arnold, the CCI4*-S winner at Tamborine International in February, and Olympian Shane Rose with three of his up and coming horses in this class
With entries closing for the Adelaide Equestrian Festival (formerly the Australian International 3 Day Event) closing on 11th April, there are just three International level competitions left before then, with Tamworth this weekend, Brigadoon (WA) on 1st & 2nd April and Equestriad CCI (NSW) on 8th & 9th April
The Oz Shotz CCI3*-S at Tamworth has 27 entries, including the CCN3* winner and runner-up at Sydney Autumn Classic, Jess Somerfield riding Finch Farm Carpentaria and Emma Mason riding KPH Kingfisher. Hazel Shannon is moving Willingapark Chelsea up a level here, having their first 3* run and New Zealand’s Maddy Seivwright will be competing Waitangi Pinterest
The Gundy Park Equine Ali Foye CCI2*-S is also well subscribed with more than 35 combinations on the entry list.
