Madeline Wilson and Oaks Onyx
Two ladies with the same surname, Madeline Wilson and Portia Wilson both made the long trip from Queensland to compete at the Randwick Equine Sydney Summer Classic last weekend and both went home with wins
Madeline Wilson’s eight year old Oaks Onyx has been making the transition to being an eventer and his past experience in show jumping certainly shone through with a lovely clear round on Saturday afternoon. Despite being one of the horses doing their dressage test during the storm, he produced a score of 36.60 for second place just behind Emma Mason’s Delago Road on 36.00.
But a clear show jumping round and just 3.2 time penalties on cross country saw Madeline move into the lead with Annabel Armstrong on Pumpernickel finishing second and Soigne Jackson’s Ultimate Velocity putting in two double clear jumping rounds for third place. Not bad for a horse that was nearly sent to the knackery and even Shane Rose refused to ride!
The winner of the EvA105A, Oaks Onyx originally came from New Zealand and Madeline told us a little more about the horse she bought last year
Soigne and Ultimate Velocity moved up from 10th place after dressage
Portia Wilson also originally hailed from New Zealand but is now Queensland based and she combined this competition at SIEC with some time for training with Andrew Barnett and Tarsha Hammond. The training must have paid off as Portia also took home a rug as the winner of the EvA95A

Portia and AH Royal Seanna added nothing to their dressage score of 35.40 to win ahead of Shane Rose on Poppy (43.20) and Natalie Miller on Bradgate Park Bizmark (45). After bringing several horses through to 2* in the past Portia is hoping that this is one that she will be able to hang on to and take all the way
