The crowd favourite has the overnight lead in the Red Snap’r CIC3* class at Arran Station, Takapau, after the dressage and showjumping phases. Donna Edwards-Smith and the diminutive palomino DSE Mr Hokey Pokey were second after the dressage on a score of 44.7 penalties, and then produced one of only three clean sheets in the showjumping.
Dressage leader Amanda Pottinger on Just Kidding, who produced their best test to date for a score of 43.3 penalties, had two rails down and a time penalty over Chris Rogers’ challenging showjumping track, but holds second place with an overnight score of 52.3 penalties.
Jessica Woods and LV Defies Logic improved from fourth place after the dressage with 53.4 penalties to lie third overnight with a clear showjumping round. Young Rider Jackson Bovill and Visionnaire held third place after the dressage on 50.2 penalties, and while they jumped a clear round, they had 4 time penalties to drop to fourth place on 54.2.
The third clear showjumping round came from Abigail Long and Enzo, who improved from seventh after the dressage to lie fifth overnight on their dressage score of 58.3. Virginia Thompson and Star Nouveau jumped clear but had 3 time penalties to retain sixth place on 61.1 penalties.
So there is all to play for in Sunday’s cross-country, which has been described as a true championship track. Chris Ross has produced a course that looks every bit as professional as that at any international event overseas, showing the benefit of his experience working on the Olympic course in Rio for two months. He was introduced to chainsaw carving there, with his fish in the water jump receiving much admiration.
