Local Giles Gormack has starred in what has otherwise been a North Island dominated ESNZ Eventing Canterbury FEI South Island Three Day Event at McLeans Island, near Christchurch today.
The Amberley-based, self-employed horticulturalist came through to win the Mitavite FEI CIC3* aboard the lovely, Lucero, with a dominant performance in the showjumping. The leader after the dressage phase, just 0.1 of a penalty separated Gormack from Kate Fleming (Pauatahnui) on Mendelsshon after yesterday's cross country.
Riding in reverse order, Fleming watched her title hopes disappear as the rails fell, giving Gormack three rails in hand. But he didn’t need it, jumping a lovely, controlled round picking up just one time fault to finish on 72.5 penalties.
Gormack was delighted with the win after a less than ideal preparation. “I’m really stoked. I couldn’t be happier. He was great out there today. It’s probably the best showjumping round he has jumped for some time,” he said

Te Puke’s Abby Lawrence was rewarded for the long trip south dominating the small but quality Ultimate Design & Renovation FEI CCI2*. Lying fourth after the dressage, Lawrence pulled up to lead aboard Song with a superb display across country finishing clear and inside the time to go into the showjumping in pole position.
With second-placed Lucy Turner (Christchurch) on Carbon posting a clear round, the pressure was on, but Lawrence held her cool, having just one fence down to retain the title on 57.8 penalties. Turner and Carbon finished second on 58.1 penalties with Corey Wood (Wyndham) on Pick Up Line third on 75.
Taupo’s Holly Morrell had an all-the-way win in the hotly-contested ESNZ Eventing Canterbury FEI CCI1* aboard Pampero. Leading from the outset, Morrell added nothing to her dressage score of 50.5 penalties to take the win narrowly from Christchurch teen Jessie Fitzjohn on What’s The Buzz on 50.8 penalties with Courtney Davis (Waipara) on By Hoki third.
It had been tight going into the showjumping phase with less than two penalties separating the top six contenders. Rails down for Frank Phillips (Te Awamutu) and Dayna Fox (Te Awamutu) proved expensive dropping them out of the winner’s line up.

Competition across the lower levels was tight with showjumping course designer Geoff Bryant’s tracks proving testing for some, giving those heading to the New Zealand Pony Cub Championships next week at Manderville a perfect dress rehearsal.
Timaru’s Amalia Rowley came through to win the Hei Hei Pharmacy CCN105 with a lovely clear showjumping finishing on her dressage score of 37 penalties, just 0.6 penalties Emily Wingham (Ashburton) on Queen of Jazz, second, and Mikayla Green (Rangiora) on Stars Ransom third, while Emma Van Vianen (Christchurch) on Ka Pai Kiwi took the honours in the Rangiora Veterinary Cenrtre CNC105. Jordan Kruger (Christchurch) on Bamboozle finished second with overnight leader Eve Hawes (Reefton) having to settle for third after having two fences down in the showjumping.
A clean score sheet aided Jamie Atkinson (Prebbleton) to success in the CCN95 on Ahuriri Dusk, while Courtney Davis (Waipara) managed to hold on to the CCN95 for 4, 5 & 6-year-olds aboard the lovely GemTime despite one rail down in the showjumping.
The two CCN80 classes were won by Colleen Marrett (Temuka) on Attenborough and Shane Maley (Darfield) on Rainier both finishing on their dressage scores.
The competition draws to a close the South Island’s eventing season with all eyes now on the National Three Day Event Championships at Taupo next month.
