My dear friend, past eventer and farrier (who is a saint for putting up with shoeing my last surviving horse, 30-year-old Charlie, whose exploits have been recorded here before), Vaughan Ellis has just closed a chapter on his career.
Having been based at Caulfield Racehorse in Melbourne for 32 years, Vaughan closed the door on his old workshop for the final time this week as the training facilities at Caulfield come to an end.
His work isn’t done – he now moves to the smart new training facility at Cranbourne Racecourse - but he posted a few photos of the place where he had ‘many great times at this place and many memories of great people, horses and of course the wonderful Apprentices I’ve had the privilege to teach over this time’
Vaughan has shod many of the well-known horses that have passed through Caulfield, but one caught my eye. This horse, Lankan Rupee, really should be the pin-up boy for the FEI’s For the Love Equestrian campaign
Lankan Rupee’s ‘star’ marking on his forehead is an almost perfect heart and this is one horse you can’t help falling in love with. Not only is he a pretty face but Lankan Rupee won five Group 1 races and $4 million in prize money for trainer Mick Price before he was retired in 2017 to start his life in show jumping with Mick’s wife, Caroline
