Seumas Marwood lives in Victoria with wife Dani and son Tyler where they run Equine Health Science, a business they started 10 years ago, manufacturing high quality specialised equine supplements now used all over Australia. While this is very rewarding, it doesn’t yet pay the bills so Seumas also works shift work allowing him time to ride and train.
While Seumas has recently come to our attention riding his wonderful Contango II mare Wild Oats, he has to say the least been around a while, starting out with Huntingfield Pony Club in Tasmania at age six. At 15, with his first really good horse Phoenix, he won the State PC eventing individual title, repeating this win the following year, eventually making it into the Australian PC team to that went to Canada.
In 1979 at age 17 he went on to complete his first senior 3 Day Event at Gawler South Australia and the following year finished third individually, steering the Tasmanian team to their one and only State Teams Championship. That year Seumas also won the Tasmanian Event Horse of the Year with Phoenix.
Since then while living in Victoria, NSW, South Australia and again Victoria, Seumas has had a dozen or so horses up at international level in eventing with four of these achieving selection onto National squads or team selection lists.
Seumas has also been very involved in the administration of the sport. He spent five years on the South Australian Eventing sub committee, was the Riders Rep on the National Eventing Committee for eight years, which was followed by a four year term as National Selector and three years as Chair of Selectors. Seumas resigned from his selectors obligations in 2011 to concentrate on his own up and coming 3* horse Wild Oats.
With Wild Oats Seumas believes he has found his ‘super star’. She is by Contango II out of a Stirling Liberty mare, purchased at auction as a yearling. On the way through the grades she has won at every level and is now established as one of the most experienced event horses in the country. At 3* level they have jumped double clear around both Melbourne and Sydney 3 Day Events and Goulburn, Camden, Canberra, Aulbury, Camperdown, Naracoorte and Avenal one day events. Wild Oats is also a B grade showjumper.
This year saw the combination named as reserve for the Australian Trans Tasman team at Sydney 3DE, followed up with a third place finish at Melbourne 3DE. Seumas is now firmly focused on selection for 2014 World Equestrian Games at Normandy.
