Chris Burton’s horse TS Jamaimo has been withdrawn from the 2014 World Equestrian Games (WEG) Eventing competition, after team veterinarians in consultation with Burton deemed the horse not fit to compete.
TS Jamaimo unexpectedly developed sudden onset abdominal pain (colic) on Thursday which was successfully treated by team veterinarians.
Subsequently he developed a fever and despite constant monitoring and appropriate treatment he has not made a full recovery in time to run cross country.
In the interest of horse and rider welfare, team management today notified event organisers that the combination would be withdrawn.
“We are hugely disappointed for Chris and the team that despite intensive treatment and management, TS Jamaimo did not recover in time to take on the cross country course,” said Eventing Team Vet, Nathan Anthony.
It is a blow for the team with Burton playing an integral role, but he believes the Aussies can still do what they need to, to remain competitive.
"I am of course devastated, I just can't believe what bad luck we've had. I'm particularly disappointed for all the owners of this horse who have been so supportive throughout this campaign. I also want to thank my support crew as well as the Australian team management for everything they have done for me and Jamaimo," said Burton
TS Jamaimo will continue to receive intensive treatment and is expected to make a full recovery.
The Australians continue their WEG campaign with the cross country getting underway today with Sam Griffiths first out for the Aussies 10:12 local time.
