The sun shines at Berrima

   Rugged up but dry!

Bright sunny weather welcomed the riders at the Berrima Horse Trials this weekend although the chill in the air was enough to make people and horses stay rugged up for the weekend.

The barrells out of the water caused no problems for this rider in the EvA105 class

The event attracted over 300 riders and ran from the popular EvA60 class, which was split into four, up to the CNC*, which was won by one of our own bloggers, Charlie Brister. Riding Timmy Almighty, Charlie cruised to victory with some stiff competition in the class, including Stuart Tinney on three horses. Charlie also pulled off a win on his young mare, Pippa, in an EvA80 class.

After the prize giving we caught up with Charlie (above) to hear what he had to say about his weekend.

The Berrima course certainly proved to be challenging enough for many riders with even the first fence causing a few problems. “It came up pretty quickly after you left the start box,” said one rider “and there were a few different fences for the horses to look at …  you just had to make sure you were aiming at the right fence!”

One jump judge who was helping out at Berrima had planned to be riding at the event but a fall at Camden has seen her taking it easy for a while. "I thought that if I couldn't ride I should come and help," said Miriam Broadhurst. "So yesterday I spent the day pencilling for one of the judges and today I have been jump judging, which given the good weather has been really enjoyable." Miriam spent her day watching cross country and running to her car to check on an animal she hadn't planned on coming along to Berrima. "I found a baby wombat on the way to the event," she explained. "It's mother had been hit by a  car so I thought I'd better do something with it - so it's in the back of my car in a cardboard box! I have spoken to the WIRES people so hopefully they will come and get it from me later today - I know much more about horses than I do about wombats!"
