Snippets from Stables Day 4 at Badminton Horse Trials

The event is now definitely in full swing with spectators are rolling in.  For those who had dressage yesterday it was time to have a jump and a canter around. Times are posted in the stable managers office showing when the jumping is open today for schooling. Those still to have dressage today where schooling their horses to try to get the best possible test, this meaning one two or three rides before their tests and also how long you are going to be riding the horses for.

It took until the third last rider if the day to take Taperz off the podium position. Maybe leaving the theory that the judges are more generous on the second day behind. James going late in the day, he had a ride in the morning and then did his test. A nice test with still areas to improve but nines for one flying change goes to show how well he could go when it all comes together. In the final warm up Burto was given guidance by Gareth Hughes, by this stage if the day it is too late to want to change any tactics but more about polishing square halts and angles in shoulder and half pass and trying to get correct poll height and positioning.

The vibe after dressage was relief that that phase was over and we could now look forward to the jumping. There weren't many riders around tonight as they were all out in an Australian team course walk. Tomorrow they will walk again in the morning deciding on which lines to take.

Cross country morning will involve walking the horses for grass and getting organised with all the gear for the big day ahead. The day doesn't start until 12 and James isn't due out until 4:20, so there will be a long night ahead!
