Australian rider Peter Atkins was one of the first to popularise the use of helmet cameras among eventers
British Eventing has issued a statement banning the use of helmet mounted cameras with immediate effect
The statement says “As a precautionary measure, pending the completion of an independent expert report on the safety of helmet cameras, the wearing of helmet cameras at all BE affiliated events has been prohibited with immediate effect.
Therefore, permissions previously given by or on behalf of the Chief Executive to wear a head camera are withdrawn.
Safety of Horses and Rider is a top priority for British Eventing and the Safety Committee has engaged the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) to conduct further research.
Further details of this extremely important research will be announced in due course”.
In recent days the use of a helmet mounted camera has been associated with the serious nature of injuries to Formula One racing driver Michael Schumacher with The Telegraph reporting that “investigators believe that they may have found a reason for the seriousness of the crash. They think that his helmet camera could have actually worsened the blown, and caused the helmet to shatter into pieces”
