Emma Scott finds a new sort of horse power
Anyone who has anything to do with running an event will know how hard it is to get the large number of volunteers needed to ensure the event can run smoothly. Committees have tried various tactics from ‘when you enter you have to nominate a helper’ to ‘we’ll pay $100 if you come and jump judge’. The problem isn’t just an Australian one but a worldwide one and I think because of the nature of our sport the problem will always be there.
The bigger events (certainly overseas) generally seem to have less problem getting helpers as people really want to be part of the Badminton or Burghley experience but trying to get 30 or so jump judges for a ‘normal’ CNC event isn’t so easy.
However, the committee at Equestriad really seem to be on the right track and I’m starting to hear from people who are looking forward to working as part of the team. Maybe that’s the answer – helpers need to feel part of the event. Sure a small gift is always appreciated, but a few words or a card from any of our top riders (and it would be even better if that top rider is on the event committee) would, I’m sure, go a long way.
At the recent Equestriad event Emma Scott, who wasn’t riding, decided to put her hand up to help at the event. As she explains in the video below she really enjoyed her day and found it was also a good learning experience as to what happens behind the scenes … and the box of Roses was pretty good too!
(Apologies for having Emma in the shade - I'm a bit paranoid about the sun!)
