Plenty to smile about! Andrew Hoy and Cheeky Calimbo scored 32.6
The chilly day at Aachen warmed up as some of the top eventing riders in the world came out to play in the Deutsche Bank stadium (which was surprisingly empty throughout most of the day)
At lunchtime it was Germany’s Andreas Ostholt (Germany) in the lead, followed by Chris Burton (Australia) and Andreas’ sister-in-law Sara Algotsson-Ostholt (Sweden) in third place.
Late in the day Andrew Hoy and the relatively inexperienced Cheeky Calimbo did a cracker of a test to score 32.6 and took the lead with only three combinations to go. However one of them was young Sandra Auffarth whose foot perfect and flawless test on Opgun Louvo scored 31.8 to finish just ahead of Andrew. The last rider, world number one Andrew Nicholson couldn’t match them and had to settle for 12th place.
After dressage the Australian riders’ placings are;
2nd Andrew Hoy and Cheeky Calimbo
5th Chris Burton and Holstein Park Leilani
33rd Bill Levett and Silk Stone
35th Murray Lamperd and Under the Clocks (individual)
39th Paul Tapner and Wickstead Didgeridoo
The top three teams after dressage are;
Germany 109.40
Australia 120.20
Sweden 123.60
We’ll have a full report from the dressage and show jumping (which takes place at 6:15pm today) on the web site tomorrow with photo galleries by Libby Law.
