Beth Turner watches out for Carson Hil in the CNC3*
As we mentioned yesterday it was great to see 27 horses in the Randwick Equine Centre CNC3* it was also interesting to note that four of those horses had the Hill suffix: Carson Hill, Adelaide Hill, Fox Hill and Church Hill.
We spoke to Beth Turner to find out more about these four horses.
“We were in the second phase of our breeding programme when I thought we should have a prefix or suffix for all the horses that we bred or that the girls, Nicky, Gendy and Jamie rode and we came up with Hill. I’m not exactly sure why we came up with Hill … maybe it was because we came from the hills of Oberon.
Foxhill was bought by Nicky from a racehorse trainer so she started his eventing career but then she sold him to Keira to help fund herself to take another horse, Warrie Hill, to Atlanta. Fox Hill has gone on to be an amazing horse for Keira, he is such a trier and very special
I went on a shopping spree for my good friend Charlotte Darcy and ended up buying Carson Hill for her to event. He jumped really nicely but was a bit tricky on the flat so my daughter Nicky bought him and now Sam is riding him while Nicky it busy with her young family.
Church Hill was evented by Gendy until she got busy with her young children and then he was ridden by Christine (Bates) for a while. Gendy then sold him to Augusta Clarke, who is now riding him at 3* level.
Of the four Hill horses in the 3* Adelaide Hill is the only one we have breed. He is by Stirling Sprite and out of a mare that was owned by George Richardson, who some of the old timers would remember as a good horse breeder. George also bred Eurella Jubilee who was ridden to great success by event rider Derek Piper. Adelaide Hills full brother is Orchard Hill who show jumps with Dave Cameron. Adelaide Hill has not always been the easiest horse but Christine (Bates) does a great job with him and of course I blame the quirky side to the mare and not our stallion," laughed Beth.
Although only one of the four Hill horses was bred by the ‘Turner’ family there can be no doubt that Beth has a good ‘eye’ for a good horse and has passed that ‘eye’ onto her daughters. So if you are looking for a new horse maybe Beth could be persuaded to go with you on your event horse shopping spree …
