With Platinum Jubilee celebrations in full swing across the country, Friday at Little Downham (1) saw Intermediate and Advanced riders celebrating in their own way at the Cambridgeshire event
They may have been National classes but the names on the roll of honour gave it an international feel with Italy, Britain and New Zealand sharing the honours
Italy’s Giovanni Ugolotti, recently named on the Italian squad long list with Duke of Champions for the World Championships on their home turf at Pratoni, won the Intermediate Section A riding Cash Points Promise.
New Zealand’s Caroline Powell took the Open Novice Section G with the six-year-old Irish bred Tokara taking his first win in fine style, finishing on their dressage score of 29.8 and Britain’s Max Warburton riding United 36, another six-year-old who recently also won at Kelsall Hill (1), took the Open Novice Section F
Melissa Joannides is on a roll at this level at the moment, having won the first leg of the Intermediate Masters at Rockingham on Patch Ali, and now has won the Intermediate Novice Section F here riding a very different style of horse (indeed, pony) with Katy Wise’s 14.2hh stallion Prometheus II
British ladies took the remaining sections with Carolyne Ryan-Bell and another ‘not very big horse’, the 15.3hh lovely grey mare Ballymoon Diamond winning the Advanced Section D.
World Champion Ros Canter seems destined to another top horse on her hands with yet another small mare, the nine-year-old 15.2hh Destiny, winning the Intermediate Section B at the mare’s first Intermediate start and backing up their recent Novice win at Rockingham International and Bubby Upton has taken her first win on the Cheddington-owned past ride of Chris Burton, Jefferson 18
Bubby and Jefferson 18 have been cementing their relationship this year with podium finishes at Thoresby International, where she told us more about these new horses, and Burnham Market International but they now have a win under their belt here in the Open Intermediate Section C. They added just 4.4 time penalties on cross country to take the win ahead of another Italian rider, Paolo Torlonia
Saturday sees the bulk of Novice competitors, along with a strong 5YO qualifier where we look to find some of the stars of the future. Among the ‘ones to watch’ are World Number One, Oliver Townend with a number of the Caunton horses, and Ros Canter will be back
