The Burghley celebration cake for the winning horse
Happy Birthday to all those horses who live in the Southern Hemisphere! (The horses who live in the Northern Hemisphere celebrate their Birthday on January 1st)
Each year at Burghley, the winning horse and rider win very fancy cakes prepared by the chefs at The George Hotel in Stamford. It is a work of art but we know that you can do it just as well!
Yes, today is the day when your horse deserves at the very least an extra carrot or apple or a special hug. But if you really want to celebrate the day you could make a simple birthday cake as per the recipe below, which is guaranteed to go down well!
Your own recipe Horse Birthday Cake
Mix together four cups of oats (or your horses usual feed) with a cup of molasses (or honey) and a few grated carrots.
Form the mixture into a cake shape and decorate with more grated carrots, full size carrotts and apples.
Or if you are going for an impressive look, simply get your horses feed bucket, put in his usual feed and then arrange, apples, carrots and a few mints (ideally polo’s although they are not easy to buy in Australia) and drizzle with molasses.
Take a photo of you masterpiece before standing back to watch him devour the whole thing!
Whatever you do for your horse today - enjoy it!
