We caught up with Joe Meyer and his wife Ruthie at Puhinui International Horse Trials to find out more about what this busy couple are up to at their home base in Ocala, Florida
Joe of course grew up in New Zealand at Mamaku Stud, famous for breeding one of the best event horses of all time, Mark Todd’s Charisma. After a successful junior eventing career, Joe headed to the UK in 1996 where he successfully competed at a high level for many years and gained selection to represent New Zealand at the 2006 World Equestrian Games and the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008
In 2011 Joe moved to Ocala, Florida where the focus is now on producing and selling promising young horses although Joe still has several young horses of his own to compete (when Ruthie doesn’t sell them!) as well as the old star Sanskrit
In our video chat, Joe and Ruthie tell us how they find these young eventing prospects, the main differences between competing in the UK and USA and Joe tells us about the young horses he is riding that he is ‘excited about’ for the coming season
