Michael Jung and Laura Collett take Le Lion honours

       Michael Jung and Fischerincantas

Michael Jung added another title to his swag at the FEI World Championships for Young Event Horses at Le Lion d’Angers this weekend with the Six Year Old Championship going to his horse Fischerincanatas.

The talented Holsteiner gelding by Ibisco was approved at the stallion licensing in Munich-Riem as a four year old and sold at auction to Julia Schmid, who also owned fischerRocana FST before moving to Michael’s stable. Michael and Fiscerincantas had six penalties in hand after the cross country phase, and though he collected four faults, they still claimed the gold medal.

      Merel Blom and The Quizmaster

The silver medal went to the Netherlands with Merel Blom riding The Quizmaster, a bay gelding by Albaran XX, finishing just 2.1 penalties behind the winners and Ireland’s Sophie Richards took the bronze medal with the Irish Sport Horse SRS Adventure. The chestnut gelding by Newmarket Venture had been steadily moving up the leader board during the event and moved in third place when France’s Stanislas De Zuchowicz riding Vingt Vingt added eight faults to finish in 10th place

Australia’s Chris Burton finished 20th on Limited Edition in the Six Year Old Championship and narrowly missed out on a podium finish in the Seven Year Old Championship on Cooley Lands. Michael Jung too had been dominating this class but had warned that the show jumping was the weakest phase for his horse Lennox 364. Indeed they added 12 penalties to their score to drop from the lead to eighth place and, when the two Australians Emma Dougall and Chris Burton, in second and third places after cross country also picked up penalties, it was Britain’s Laura Collett on Mr Bass who was crowned the Seven Year Old Champion.

Mr Bass, a bay Holsteiner gelding by Carrico finished on his dressage score of 45.2 just ahead of last Tom Carlile’s grey stallion Upsilon and (46.5) and another stallion in third place, Vincent Martens’ Eiskonig (47.6), all of whom finished with clear jumping rounds

      Emma Dougall and Fernhill Tabasco

Emma Dougall slipped from second place to fifth with one rail and one time penalty on Fernhill Tabasco, by Tabasco Van Erpekom but this was still a great performance from Emma and the horse that she and partner Kevin McNab bought this horse from Carol Gee at Fernhill Sport horses as a just-broken five year old soon after they arrived in the UK.

      Chris Burton and Cooley Lands

Their friend Chris Burton, with just one penalty less than Emma, moved into fourth place riding Kate Walls’ Irish Sport Horse, Cooley Lands

Of the ten breeding studbooks competing in the Six and Seven Year-Old classes over the weekend, the Irish Sport Horse studbook finished in pole position on 151 penalties, with the German Holsteiner studbook second on 153 penalties, and the Dutch KWPN studbook in third on 153.2.
