2012 NRM National Three Day Event

2012 NRM NATIONAL 3DE

The action started at the Fiber Fresh National Equestrian Centre, Taupo, on Thursday with sunny but cold conditions, for the veterinary inspection of all horses competing in the NRM National Three-day Event. After this the two teams who were to contest the Inter-island Teams Competition were named.

It was decided to use the same formula that will operate at the Olympic Games, with teams of five riders, and the top three scores counting, as both islands had five riders in the top class.

It is an indication of the strength of the sport in the South Island that there are five riders in the NRM CCI3*. They are Brent Jury (RangiorA) on SE Big, Larissa Srhoy (Ashburton) on Starburst, Emily Cammock (Christchurch) on Dambala, Christen Hayde (now based in Pukekohe but from Otago) on Tandarra Sweet As, and Annavel Wigley (Amberley) on NRM Enzo. Annabel also has a second ride, NRM Frog Rock.

The North Islanders are Chloe Davidson (Auckland) on Eskimo Joe, Katharine Gillaly (Woodville) on Laura Knight’s Ricmeister, Dannie Lodder (Auckland) on Petra Eatson’s Moochi, Donna Smith (Te Kauwhata) on Sarah and Tim Varley’s Just Chocolate, and Heelan Tompkins (New Plymouth) on the Crothers family’s Major Difference. Heelan also rides Pip McCarroll’s Cortaflex Up N Go.

The first half of the Bates CCI2* class did their dressage on Thursday afternoon with the rest competing on this morning. The same Ground Jury of Margaret Dickie (Southland), Beverley Shandley (Victoria), and Carol Harrison, Waikato were kept busy judging both the CCI2* and the CCI3* class in the afternoon.

By the end of today it was the South Island on top, with their riders holding the top four spots in the NRM CCI3* class at the Fiber Fresh National Equestrian Centre, Aratiatia.

Dambala puts his best foot forward to impress the judges

Emily Cammock (Christchurch) has a narrow lead on Dambala, scoring 48 penalties, with Larissa Srhoy (Ashburton) a whisker behind on Starburst with 48.4 penalties. Annabel Wigley (Amberley) is third on NRM Frog Rock with 54.2, followed by Brent Jury on SE Big with 56 penalties.

The first North Islander, Heelan Tompkns (New Plymouth), lies fifth with the Crothers family’s Major Difference on 59.4 penalties, with Annabel sixth on her second ride, NRM Enzo, on 59.6. Heelan is seventh on her second ride, Pip McCarroll’s Cortaflex Up N Go on 60.4 penalties.

The field was reduced to eleven starters with the late scratching of Donnas Smith’s ride, Sarah and Tim Varley’s Just Chocolate, leaving the North Island team with four riders, but with the best three scores counting, the South Island have a runaway lead at this stage.

The Bates CCI2* class, with thirty-one starters, is led by Chelsey Hawthorn (Hamilton) on Pioneer Zeuss with 44.6 penalties, ahead of the overnight leader Donna Smith (Te Kauwhata) on Balmoral Sensation on 46.8. South Islander Katie Rankin (Christchurch) on Time To Tango Too is third equal with Ben Bateman (Feilding) on Fiber Fresh Façade on 47.4 penalties.

Conditions look ideal for tomorrows cross-country, with John Nicholson’s course drawing favorable comment from riders and spectators alike. Brent Jury describes it as ‘absolutely awesome’, with the Australian Technical Delegate, Neil Clinton, saying, “The design, layout, and decoration is first class. It’s a very good course, testing and challenging.”
