West Melton’s Emily Cammock has kicked off the new season in fine fettle leading from start to finish to win the CNC2* at Eventing Canterbury’s inaugural event of the season at the NEC McLeans Island today.

Riding Lewis, Cammock put in a smart dressage performance to lead the small field on 35 penalties. The pair had two rails down and collected time penalties in the showjumping, but jumped a lovely clear round across country over the Richard Crowe-designed track picking up just 15.6 time faults to finish on a score of 62.6.They finished well clear of second-placed Sophie Abbott and Time to Tango Too on 74.8.

Current CIC2* South Island Three Day Event champion Giles Gormack and Lucero had the win well within in sight, but disappointingly missed a fence on the cross country, forcing elimination, when otherwise clear and inside the time allowed.

Cammock was also on form in the CNC105 B, winning handsomely aboard Double J Remember Back on 31.8 penalties, with the CNC105 A going to Kirsty Jacomb and Street Wise on their dressage score of 33.5.

The hotly-contested CNC1* classes went to Ali Scholes on Alfresco and Jessie Fitzjohn on What’s The Buzz finishing on 37.2 and 38.9 respectively, both having jumped clear but incurring time faults on a day where the time had a big impact on the standings with no combinations making the time. Of the combined 30 starters, nine withdrew, were eliminated, or retired.

Impressive jumping saw Emma Simpson on La Bella Vida and Jaya O’Neill on Z’questionair take out the two CNC95 divisions while the CNC85 classes were won by Lindsay Colwell on Che Bello, Danielle Smith on Tiraumea Legacy and Nicola Sim on Chocolate Ice.

The day itself went off without a hitch despite the huge entries.

Now the focus shifts to Eventing Canterbury’s next event at McLeans Island on October 11, building up to the two day South Island One Day Event Championships at the same venue on November 7-8.
