Matangi’s Samantha Felton will go into tomorrow’s cross country phase poised to pick up one of New Zealand eventing’s biggest crowns after a sensational performance has her leading the prestigious CIC3* Forest Gate Trophy field at the National One Day Event Championships at McLeans Island (Christchurch).

First and second in the CIC2* here last year, Felton and the 10-year-old Ricker Ridge Pico Boo showjumped their way into the lead this afternoon with a faultless performance. Lying third after dressage behind Amanda Pottinger (Waiarapa) on Achilles II on 44.8 and 2012 champ Donna Smith (Te Kauwhata) on Tangolooma on 51.5, a clear round saw them go into the lead on 52.1 with the final all-important cross country phase yet to go.

West Melton’s Emily Cammock remains in touch with Dambala, sitting second on 55 penalties, moving up from fifth after dressage with a single time fault in the showjumping, with four faults dropping Smith back to third to sit on 55.5 just 0.1 penalties ahead of Fraser King (Cambridge) on Nadal KSNZ. While Pottinger and Achillies II made their task more difficult incurring 16 faults in the showjumping to drop them down the order. Felton lies in fifth on her second ride Henton After Dark and seventh on Ricker Ridge Escada on 57.3 and 59 respectively.
