NORTH ISLANDERS REIGN SUPREME AT NZCT SOUTH ISLAND 3DE

Even atrocious wet conditions couldn’t stifle the North Islanders superiority at the NZCT South Island Three Day Event which concluded at the National Equestrian Centre at McLeans Island in Christchurch yesterday.

Despite a less than perfect show jumping, Inglewood’s Fraser King had done enough to win the Tavern Harewood CCI2* with Nadal KSNZ., from local Emily Cammock on Shaw Lee, with King third on his second mount Diego KSNZ.
King, who is currently working as a barrister while completing his PhD, led throughout on the 12-year-old thoroughbred, Nadal KSNZ. He came into today’s show jumping phase lying first and second after both his horses put in supreme efforts over the Nick Pyke-designed cross country on Saturday.

Persistent rain continued today making for challenging conditions. All riders in the CCI2* picked up show jumping faults, but in the end the honours belonged to King on his first jaunt to the South Island. “I was absolutely thrilled. I couldn’t fault either of my horses. We’ve had a blast,” said King.

Tayla Mason

Tayla Mason made the long trip south from Paraparaumu worthwhile winning the National Young Rider Three Day Event Championship, adding to the National Young Rider One Day Event title she won in February aboard Lucy With Diamonds. She was the only contender, but needed to finish to take the title.

Palmerston North’s Helen Bruce (below) totally dominated the Devi Heating Systems CCI1* leading from go to whoa aboard the stunning, Toblerone NZPH. Despite one rail down in the show jumping, Bruce had the title well within her grasp, taking the win with one rail to spare on a final score of 47.5.

Rangiora’s Ellie Braddock and Miss Matilda put in a smart display to finish second overall with a clean sheet, also securing the Lenamore Trophy for the National Junior Rider Three Day Event Champion. Third went to Sophie Wigley (Amberley) aboard former National One Day Eventing champion S.E. Big.

In the Hei Hei Pharmacy Pre Novice the honours belonged to Waipara’s Courtney Davis on By Hoki finishing on a score of 34.3 despite a rail down in the show jumping. Nicole Chapman (Amberley) moved up to second with clear jumping aboard Double Agent, also taking out the NZPCA pony Club Award for the highest placed pony club rider in Pre Novice, with Katharine Gillaly (Woodville) and High Five third, also clear.

Sophie Wigley came through to win the hotly-contested Striding Edge Horse Shoeing Training with Billabong, adding just 0.8 penalties to their dressage score over the three days to finish on a total of 32.1. Teen Grace O’Sullivan (Rangiora) moved up from ninth after dressage to take second on 35.5 aboard Halycon Motzart with a clean sheet, with Brodie Roberts (Kaiapoi) on SR Livingstone, third with 37.3.

Cammock (West Melton) and Cavorts were successful in the 21-strong Tavern Harewood Training for 4, 5, & 6 Year Olds ahead of Kirsten Beaven (West Melton) on RV Dreamcatcher and Courtney Davis (Waipara) on Dunrobin Sante Fe third, all finishing on their dressage scores.

The three-way battle for the Blue Gum Lodge Motel and Saddlery Barn Pre Training A came down to cross country time with Nick Pyke (Broadfields) on Staples, Abbey Baker (Yaldhurst) on Smart Spark, and Archie Ward-Smith (Oamaru) on Wandering Star all jumping clear in the show jumping to finish on their dressage score of 36.5, while the Devi Heating Systems Pre Training B was won by Loburn’s Christine Monk on Redford leading throughout.
