Sam and Horseware Lukeswell jump clear on the final day
The traditional luck of the Irish deserted the team of Michael Ryan, Joseph Murphy, Padraig McCarthy and Austin O’Connor at last week’s FEI European Eventing Championships. Michael Ryan riding Ballylynch Adventure was the only member of the Irish team to complete the cross country phase during the difficult weather conditions at Blair Castle, finishing the competition 14th individually with a total score of 61.10
However it was Irish rider Sam Watson, competing as an individual, who finished the best of the Irish competitors in 12th place on a total of 59.30 penalties. Riding the 10 year old Irish Sport Horse Horseware Lukeswell, owned by Sam and Teresa Walsh, Sam moved up from 27th after the dressage to 13th after cross country, thanks to a clear round with just 15.20 time penalties despite the pouring rain and topped it off with a clear show jumping round on the final day
We spoke to Sam after his show jumping round about his experience at Blair Castle, his young horse and what the future holds for them
