There’s a lot of talk in Australia about losing our top riders who go to live overseas in order to compete. Looking at it from another point of view, it must be pretty annoying for local eventers in the UK when the Aussies and New Zealanders invade en masse. At the moment seven of Australia’s top riders and four New Zealand riders feature in the current British Eventing Top 20
From Australia Lucinda Fredericks is in 4th place, Paul Tapner in 5th, Chris Burton 6th, Bill Levett 8th, Andrew Hoy 10th, Clayton Fredericks 11th and Sam Griffiths 16th. From New Zealand Andrew Nicholson has the number one position (yes, William Fox-Pitt is in third!), Caroline Powell in 9th, Mark Todd in 15th and Lucy Wiegersma in 18th.
Australian riders’ horses are doing pretty well too with Lucinda Fredericks’ Flying Finish in top spot, Andrew Hoys’ Rutherglen 2nd, Paul Tapner’s Inonothing in 11th, Wendy Schaeffer’s Koyuna Sun Dancer in 12th and Chris Burton’s Haruzac in 16th.
Points are earned at Novice level and above for horses and riders and a tally kept; at the end of the year the Top 100 horse and rider lists are published by British Eventing.
Some British riders must be wondering when they’re all going home!
