Down Under on top at Barbury

Andrew Nicholson and Avebury

Two New Zealand riders, the master Andrew Nicholson riding Avebury (pictured above) and the apprentice Jonathan Paget riding Clifton Lush swooped at Barbury today to take first and second spot in the CCI 3* dressage.

With NZ team announcements only days away they showed that they weren’t to be trifled with to score 41.6 and 42.6 respectively. Dual Olympic gold medallist Mark Todd showed that he also wanted another crack at an Olympic Games and scored 44 on his replacement Olympic mount NZB Campino for fifth place.

Another team hopeful, this time for the US, Boyd Martin also stepped it up a notch scoring 43.4 on Remington XXV to take third place. Remington was a late addition to the US Eventing short list on June 17th but obviously a good one! There were great expectations for Phillip Dutton and Mystery Whisper who finished on a score of 48 in 14th place.

Yesterday’s leader Kitty King is now in 4th place and Australia’s Clayton Fredericks in sixth, only 3.2 points off the lead. Chris Burton and Kinnordy Rivaldo, a relatively inexperienced horse at this level, did a great job to be in 12th place in top class company on 47.0. Other Australian placings in the CIC 3*are;

18th Bill Levett and One Two Many NJ  48.6

=71st Paul Tapner and Caicos  59.2

91st Sammi McLeod and Kintara  62.8

Chris Burton

There is a horse in this class called the Wizard from Aus; maybe this should be Chris Burton’s new title. In the unofficial 4* Combined Training class Chris and Holstein Park Leilani (pictured above) lead the Olympic dressage test competition on a score of 42.8, with the show jumping phase of the competition completing the class today.  Once again Jock Paget showed his form, this time on Clifton Promise putting them into second place on 43.1, with young British superstar rider Laura Collet and Rayef and American rider Allison Springer with Arthur finishing in joint third.
