Camilla Kruger and Biarritz II won the Intermediate I
A chilly breeze could not detract from the hot competition on the second day of the Bacon.co.uk Burnham Market Horse Trials.
Intermediate riders took centre stage with Oliver Townend, last year's winner of both of the big three star classes, collecting an armful of prizes. He had a winner in Red Andes Fanfare, runner up spots with Power Drive and Peruising, and a 4th place on Silken Scully.
Camilla Kruger (Zimbabwe), Andrew Hoy (Australia) and Aoife Clark (Ireland) were the remaining Intermediate section winners, making it a truly international affair. Andrew won the Open Intermediate Section K on his new ride The Blue Frontier, previously campaigned by Sandra Auffarth
Suffolk young rider Bubby Upton was back in the ribbons, winning the Under 18 novice class on a new ride, Fernhill Rock Star. “It was our first novice together and although I'm still getting to know him, he is gorgeous! He really knows his job and gave me a wonderful ride,” she said.
Tom Jackson and Norway's Stine Hoff took the last two novice classes of the event.
Piggy French, who originally hails from Norfolk, leads the CIC2* at the end of the dressage phase. Like Bubby she was also riding a new horse, OBOS Cooley. “He's very exciting, a total showman and a good prospect for the future. It's impossible not to like him,” said Piggy.
“I always like coming to Burnham Market – I really feel the public support and interest, having been brought up in Norfolk. Tomorrow's cross country course looks inviting, with some good questions – I'm looking forward to riding it.”
Pippa Funnell remains at the top of the CIC3* table, but with Oliver Townend breathing down her neck there is all to play for tomorrow.
