The British stud book, Sport Horse Breeding of Great Britain (SHB-GB) has announced a new and exciting prize – The Young Event Horse Grand Slam.
The SHB(GB) Young Event Horse Grand Slam offers an unprecedented prize pool of £50,000 to the breeder, owner and rider of a young horse that is placed in the first three of consecutive five, six and seven-year-old championships at the British Eventing Young Horse Championships.
The prize, that is the first of its kind in the UK for young horses, aims to reward breeders of successful horses with the largest share of £30,000, being awarded to the breeder. The remainder of the pool will be shared equally between the owner and the rider.
In order to be eligible for the SHB(GB) Grand Slam, horses must be British bred and be registered in the SHB(GB) Stud Book before the close of entries for the five-year-old championship.
“This unique prize aims to not only highlight our Young Horse Championships and the success of British-bred horses but also and importantly reward those who are instrumental in their success,” said Vin Jones the Chairman of the SHB(GB) Breeding Committee. “In particular we want to reward the breeder as so often breeders are the ones that do not get the recognition they deserve”.
The SHB(GB) Young Horse Grand Slam will be launched this year at the BE Young Horse Championships that are to be held at Osberton (1-4 October). All eyes will be on the five-year-old championship class (Friday 2 October) to see which horses will take the first three places and therefore be the ones in contention in the 2016 six-year-old championship.
“Anything that highlights the success of our British-bred young horses has to be good and this prize certainly does that and tops them all,” said Stuart Buntine, organiser of the BE Young Horse Championships. “I look forward to seeing the Young Event Horse Grand Slam ball start rolling.”
