Sunday at Hartpury

Lucinda Fredericks finished best of the Aussies on Sunday with a second place in the CCI2*

The action continued at the NAF International Horse Trials on Sunday although it included some action we are sure the organisers would have rather done without.

As the cross country began the first two combinations fell on course. Thankfully despite one rider being air-lifted it appears that both horses and riders are ok. However this left the organisers running an hour and a half behind the scheduled time.

The second water complex caused various problems and the frangible pin had lots of use but again no major injuries. Then a little later in the day as Tom Rowland and W.Iridiium were making their way round the CCI2* they collided with an officials vehicle, which was in the galloping lanes of course. Amazingly it appears W.Iridiium was not badly injured and Tim was able to ride his one star horse later in the day, where he finished eighth and received the Denis Ivan Memorial Trophy for being the highest placed rider under 25 years.

The following joint statement was placed on the placed on the Hartpury Horse Trials website from Claire Dubowski, Owner of W. Iridium and Russell Marchant, Hartpury College Principal and President of the Organising Committee for the Hartpury Horse Trials:

“We are working with all parties to investigate the incident yesterday when an official’s car collided with Tom Rowland riding W. Iridium on the cross country course for the CCI ** at Hartpury College. The incident was deeply disappointing for Tom and the owners, as Tom was unable to finish the competition through no fault of his own or the horse.  Up until this incident, Tom and W. Iridium were going well around the course.

The horse received immediate veterinary attention and was monitored by the Hartpury veterinary team.  At this stage it seems the horse is relatively unscathed, but will continue to be monitored and hopefully will compete again in the autumn.

Both the College and the horse’s connections will continue to work together to ensure that, through the investigation, we learn from this and ensure the event organising committee take all the steps necessary to minimise the risk of an incident like this happening again.”

With the event running late into the evening the eventual winner of the Magic CCI2* was won by Italian event rider Vittoria Panizzon (above) riding Brorough Pennyz with Lucinda Fredericks  and The Navigatorsecond. Helen West and Foxdon Sunny Jim finished on their dressage score of 45 to win the Profeet CCI*, with Sacha Hourigan, from Ireland, riding Themis in second.

A faultless cross country and show jumping gave Helen West a win in the CCI*
