The final 50 shares in the two foals born by embryo transfer to the talented eventing mare Headley Britannia became available in December.
Headley Britannia, owned by Lucinda and Clayton Fredericks and competed by Lucinda, was the first mare to win Burghley in 33 years when she claimed the four-star event in 2006. The following year, 2007, she became the first mare in 53 years to win Badminton and went on to won Olympic silver at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and took out the Rolex Kentucky CCI 4**** in 2009.
In 2008 Headley Britannia had a colt, Britannia’s Mail, and a filly, Little Britannia, by Jaguar Mail, who was ridden by Swedish showjumper Peter Eriksson at the 2008 Olympic Games and, like Headley Britannia, won a team silver medal.
According to the Lucinda and Clayton “Already, we can see the potential in Britannia’s Mail and Little Britannia. Their movement, attitude and athleticism shine out even at this early stage. They have everything it takes to follow in their parents’ hoof prints and, of course, their enormous breeding potential makes them valuable investments as well as valuable prospects” Throughout 2011, the two young horses have started their education being handled, lead, tacked up, lunged, long-reined, sat upon and ridden and have been taken out to small shows. The plan is to produce them both through to the British young event horse (BYEH) classes, then take them to Le Lion d’Angers as six- and seven-year-olds. The first shares in the syndicate were released in August 2010 which were bought by six people. The foals are syndicated as a pair, so a 1% share (£1850 + VAT) is 1% in each horse rather than just one – there is then just an annual fee (per share) to go towards the running costs.
