Upsilon, the Anglo Arab stallion ridden by France’s Tom Carlile, who captured the imagination of the eventing community from his earliest days under saddle has passed away.
The winner of French Young Horse Championships and runner-up of the Seven-Year-Old World Championship at Le Mondial Du Lion in 2015, the grey stallion went on to win or place at all the international events he contested before becoming ill in 2019.
His many accolades include back-to-back wins at 3* (now 4*) level at Barbury International, Blenheim Palace International and Millstreet as well as a CCI2* (now 3*) win at Houghton International in 2018
He was retired from competition after developing after a bacterial infection, causing neurological damage, but he recovered enough to be lightly ridden at home and became a very popular sire for many eventing breeders.
On 16th April 2023, Tom Carlile posted on his social media that Upsilon had passed away, saying “Every horseman's dream is to one day cross the path of such a horse”
“I remember when I first met you ... you blew me away with your charisma and presence. No one could remain indifferent in front of you. Dad, Mom, Gérard & Philippe quickly joined your adventure. And what an adventure! You left us with amazing memories. You will have marked so many minds with your brilliance and talent
The injustice of life has returned to strike you without warning. How we miss you Upsilon. Rest in peace my friend”
