Set in the beautiful Cotswold countryside of Ampney Down, just outside Cirencester, Calmsden Horse Trials offers well run and fun events combined with a family atmosphere.
Andrew Hunter, who was part of the team that built the Greenwich Olympic course has designed and built the track here since 2010 and was joined more recently by international course designer Adrian Ditcham. Together they have designed the Novice track that is very popular with leading riders as it provides plenty of variety and makes full use of the undulating Cotswold Downland
This year there will be some new fences for all classes including ditches, water, walls, hedges and portables; the course runs down the banks and back up in 2019 so riders will be making sure that their horses are pretty fit!
Local rider, Ireland’s Jonty Evans has long been a fan of this event and he returns this year riding the ‘people’s horse’ Cooley Rorke’s Drift in the Open Novice along with other well-known locals such as Italy’s Vittoria Panizzon and World Number One, Tim Price
Other New Zealanders competing include Ginny Thompson, Tayla Mason, Lucy Jackson and Jesse Campbell while Sam Griffiths and Tabitha Williamson (an name new to us) are competing for Australia
The BE100 Open U18 will be hotly contested with two of this year’s Team GB gold European Pony medallists, Ibble Watson and Freya Partridge among the entries
