Chris is presented with the Burghley cake (yes, that's a carrot cake on the side for the winning horse)
In case you’ve been living under a stone for the past week or so, you may have missed that Chris Burton and his wife Bek Thompson are expecting their first baby in May 2017.Of course we send them huge congratulations on the exciting news and just hope that it doesn’t clash with Badminton!
It wouldn’t be a first time an event rider has been expecting to be called to the hospital at any moment – in 2014 William Fox-Pitt’s wife Alice was heavily pregnant when William was competing at Burghley. Lying second after the dressage, William was asked in the press conference (by Sam Griffiths!) what his plans were if Alice went into labour on cross country day.
“Good question” laughed William “Do you think I could get to Dorset and back by 3:30pm?” (watch the full video of the press conference here)
This made us think that, if they haven’t already eaten it, Chris and Bek already have the perfect Christening cake thanks to the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials
The fabulous cake presented to the winner courtesy of The George Hotel in Stamford is a traditional iced fruit cake which would be perfect with a glass of celebratory champagne on the baby’s arrival. All fruit cakes get better with age and we know that they can last a long time; Andrew Nicholson told us that one of his Burghley winners’ cakes was found in his lorry almost a year later when his brother was desperately searching for something to eat and it was delicious!
No wonder Bek was smiling!
