Hans Melzer, Chris Bartle and Sandra Auffarth farewell Sandra's wonderful Opgun Louvo (Wolle) at Aachen CHIO
In 2018 the then reigning world eventing champion Sandra Auffarth advised that she would not be defending her title on Opgun Louvo at the Tryon World Equestrian Games, having made the decision not contest any more Championship events on her top horse
Opgun Louvo (Wolle) was indeed the horse of a lifetime for Sandra, winning nine medals at five championships, including the team and individual World Championship in Normandy in 2014. The young rider and her chestnut horse first made an impression on the international scene when they finished second in the CCI4* at Luhmühlen in 2011, going on to win team gold and individual silver at the European Championships at the same venue.
They represented their country at two Olympic Games (team gold and individual bronze at London 2012; team silver at Rio 2016), one World Equestrian Games (team and individual gold at Normandy 2014) and another European Championship (team gold and individual silver at Blair 2015), finished fourth at Badminton in 2013 and also won the individual title at Aachen in 2014.
It was fitting therefore that this horse, that has done so much for Germany, received a tribute at Aachen CHIO in 2019 as Sandra officially announced his retirement
