Paul Sims and Glengarnock
Britain’s Paul Sims holds the lead at the lunch break on the first day at the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials riding the 14 year old Glengarnock. Cheshire based Paul, who is competing at his third consecutive Burghley with Glengarnock, was the second rider into the arena and scored 46.6 to put him just ahead of the USA’s Elisa Wallace, who scored 46.8 riding Simply Priceless on their Burghley debut

Elisa admits that it was quite an emotional moment when she saw the score and relaised that she had moved into second place as the last rider of the morning session
Local rider Ros Canter is in third place riding Allstar B, a horse that needs ‘a bit of inspiration’ with a score of 47
“There were some really good moments but there were also a couple of mistakes that I’d like to go in and try to do again! You always come out thinking that you could have done better but he is a really consistent performer and he really did try his best.
I could have done with a bit more atmosphere, he’s unlike most event horses,he does rely on me to carry him around if he can, so it would be nice to get a slightly later dressage and get him revved up a bit by the crowd”

Three riders whose names are probably more the ones you expect to see at the top of the leader board are Andrew Hoy, Tim Price and Oliver Townend who currently round out the top six
We spoke to Andrew after his test on his first ride here, Rutherglen who is currently in fourth place with a score of 49.4
