Ireland’s Susie Berry bounced back into the 2020 season at Aske Horse Trials in North Yorkshire last weekend with several wins and placings

Emulating her past ‘boss’ and friend, Piggy March, who usually gathers a host of ribbons at Bede Events’ normal season opener at Oasby (1), Susie took three wins in the Novice Section U  on Kilcandra Capitol, the Open Intermediate Section Section I on Ringwood LB and the Open Novice Section E on Caroline’s Air KM while Monbeg By Design took third place in the Intermediate Section H

She wasn’t the only serial winner at the first event run by Bede since the resumption of sport with Scotland’s Wills Oakden also on top form after lockdown

Perthshire-based Wills made his journey south worthwhile with a very ‘cool’ weekend at Aske. As well as winning the Open Intermediate Section J riding AKD Cooley Lockdown, he also won the Intermediate Section H riding Macgregors Cooley, took second place on Hilton Cooley and seventh on A Class Cooley as well as finishing second to Susie Berry in the OI Section I with Oughterard Cooley

In the lower classes Emily King also picked up multiple ‘virtual’ ribbons, winning the BE100 Section Q on board the six-year-old MBF Arctic Emperor as well as the aptly named 17h gelding Imposant taking the BE100 Open Section S.

The weather was kind, the event ran smoothly amid all the new protocols and procedures and we’ll be back soon with our full report, the riders’ reactions across the classes, more photos and of course some cross country video action … (in the meantime you can check out snippets of footage on our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts)
