2020 hasn’t been the best of years for anyone but for Willa Newton, just as things started to get better and restrictions eased in the UK in late June, things got worse

A broken pelvis incurred during cross country training had her sidelined for most of the season although some of her horses have had outings, and wins, in the very capable hands of riders such as JP Sheffield and Ros Canter

But on Saturday at Oasby (2), Willa came back to competition and enjoyed a win straight off the bat. Riding Georgie Jelf’s Cock a Doodle Doo, Willa started in the lead of the Open Novice on a very good dressage score of 21.5 and added just 1.2 time penalties on cross country to finish nearly six penalties ahead of second placed Sam Ecroyd.

   Ludwig Svennerstal and Balham Mist

It was also good day at the office for Open Intermediate winner, Sweden’s Ludwig Svennerstal riding Balham Mist, who added just one show jumping time fault to win on a score of 26.7 in a strong field  that included Australian riders Catherine Burrell and Sammi Birch, who both finished in the top 12

Jess Corser took the Open Intermediate U21, also several penalties ahead of the rest of the field, riding Moangarriff Duke

Angus Smales riding Gido G and Italy’s Roberto Scalisi riding Alamein, coming off a win at Dauntsey Park, took out the Intermediate Sections A and B

Jemima Shaw riding Cranny Volt won the Open Novice U18 and Imogen Murray on Violetta B took the Novice Section F

Tomorrow’s competition features the BE100 classes including the British Eventing 5-Year-Old Championship so check back then to find how who wears the 2020 crown!
