Scottish BE90 Championships
Dumfriesshire based Zara Weir and her own nine-year-old Deloughtane Rockstar are the newly crowned Scottish BE90 Champions. This is Zara’s first season of affiliated eventing, but she quickly bagged two BE90 wins before stepping up to BE100 last time out.
It has been a busy week for Zara. She was in the Scottish team at the Summer Championships earlier in the week, then she and Deloughtane Rockstar did a Working Hunter HOYS qualifier on arrival at Blair – his previous career, which will continue, although Zara is thoroughly enjoying eventing.
Second after dressage on 26.8, Zara said “I really didn’t expect this. He was foot perfect throughout, it’s really exciting.” The pair add nothing to their first phase score.
Dressage leaders Eilidh Herd and Zuccheros Deff Leppard paid the price for a slightly steady cross country round during which they collected four time penalties, dropping down to eventual third place. This is the combination’s third run at the Championships, and their best result to date.
Morven Ritchie and her 19-year-old Star X slotted in between Zara and Eilidh, with a great dressage score completion, just one penalty behind the winners.
Ruby Thompson and Penstrumbly Calon Lan
Scottish BE100 Championships
Ruby Thompson and Penstrumbly Calon Lan claimed the BE100 title. As with Zara, Ruby lay in second place after dressage. Despite picking up 3.2 time penalties across country, she moved to the top of the table when overnight leaders Nia-wyn Williams and Buachaill Beag had a rather expensive showjumping round.
Fifteen-year-old Ruby, who is based in North Yorkshire, explained: “He was originally bought for mum, but I rather knicked him! We did the BE90 Grassroots at Badminton earlier this year, finishing 15th, but I really wasn’t expecting to win here. I just wanted to go clear across country and have him enjoy himself.
“I loved the atmosphere, it was amazing. He got a bit tired at the top of the hill – he’s not built for speed – but he just kept jumping.”
Hannah Broadhurst and WSH Sacruz took the runners-up spot with a dressage score completion, with Jodie Darrie and Woodendfarm Freddy O completing the top three.
