Here we go! The British Eventing season may start the week before but, for us, Oasby (1) Horse Trials in Lincolnshire is where it all kicks off
Oasby is well-known as the perfect venue for early and late season events, as the flat, well-draining ground is ideal for giving horses their first run of the season. Stuart Buntine’s courses will run in a clockwise direction this year and provide straight forward jumping without too many significant challenges to help horses and riders ‘get their eye in’
Entries under the new non-ballot system were outstanding with classes running from Thursday 9th – Sunday 12th from BE90 to Open Intermediate
Thursday and Friday see the big guns out on course with Intermediate, Open Intermediate, Novice and Open Novice classes on Thursday and Friday
On Saturday and Sunday it is the turn of the Novice, BE100 (including Open and Pony Trial) and BE90 competitors
As always, the entry list for Oasby reads like a Who’s Who of eventing in the Open Intermediate and Intermediate classes.
Two World Champions are competing in the OI on Thursday with Ros Canter and Yasmin Ingham starting their season. They both have several rides, including their Pratoni 2022 horses Banzai Du Loir and Lordships Graffalo, as do Piggy March and Izzy Taylor while Kitty King is bringing Vendredi Biats for a run and Susie Berry, who started the season so well at Poplar Park, will be competing Clever Trick
Australia’s Kevin McNab and New Zealand’s Sam Lissington and Ginny Thompson will also be competing on Thursday
Oliver Townend won the first two OI classes at Poplar Park and he comes to Oasby on Friday with As Is, Crazy Du Loir and Caunton First Class in the OI here – can he do it again?
The Open Intermediate U21 will see some of the top up and coming stars of the sport in action, including FEI Rising Star Alice Casburn riding Topspin, winners of this class last year and Isabel Cook, riding her Junior European Team Gold and Individual Silver medal winning horse, Mexican Law
Laura Collett, Zara Tindall, Harry Meade and Tom McEwen are among the other entries, making it a fabulous way to start the 2023 season
