An early start for the CCI4*-S show jumping on Saturday morning saw France’s Astier Nicolas regain the lead at the Land Rover Blair Castle International Horse Trials in Scotland

Riding Babylon De Gamma, who won the class here in 2019 and is returning to competition after injury, Astier jumped a clear round with 1.2 time penalties to now sit on a score of 27.2 while yesterday’s leader after dressage, Oliver Townend and Ballaghmor Class had one rail down and added 0.4 time penalties to drop to fifth place (29.4)

Tom McEwen and Brookfield Quality moved up from fifth place into second with a clear jumping round and 0.4 time penalties (28.2) and Oliver Townend is in third on Swallow Springs (28.5), fourth on Tregilder (28.7), fifth on Ballaghmor Class (29.4), sixth on As Is (30.2) and seventh on Crazy Du Loir (30.4)

Only five combinations jumped double clear; Oliver produced two of these on As Is and Crazy Du Loir and was joined in the Clubhouse by New Zealand’s James Avery riding Sportsfield Lord Livesey, who moved up to ninth place (33.7), Wills Oakden riding DHI BY Design and Emily Orpwood riding Cover Girl Cooley

But it is tight at the top with just 6.7 penalties between the top ten heading into tomorrow’s deciding cross country day at Blair
