The beautiful setting of the Marlborough Downs will once again host the Barbury International Horse Trials from 8th – 11th July and this week’s event offers a last chance to see some Tokyo-bound riders as well as some talented ex-racehorses and new Novice Masters among the classes
Two of New Zealand’s Tokyo team who live very close to Barbury, Tim and Jonelle Price will be competing various horses across the classes, including Tim’s Tokyo mount Vitali who is entered in the CCI4*-S. Another Kiwi, known as the King of Barbury, Andrew Nicholson will be contesting this class with two horses including the 2019 winner Swallow Springs and Zara Tindall is back in the saddle of Class Affair at 4* level after having her baby. Tom McEwen, who was the stand-in maternity jockey for Zara, is also having his last hit out before heading to Tokyo and will be a very busy man across many of the classes on multiple horses
To make allowances for those entering Olympic quarantine, the event is running the jumping phases for the CCI4*-S on the Saturday rather the Sunday while the two CCI3* sections will be split to run cross country on both Saturday and Sunday.
The Novice classes are packed and the first leg of the new Novice Masters, designed to encourage the middle-tier of riders (riders in the BE Top 150 are excluded) over the age of 18 at this level, is taking place at Barbury. We’re particularly excited about this class as we’re providing a video prize for the winner and the combination closest to optimum time as well as special discounts for second to sixth places in the class.
We’ll also be keeping a keen eye on the IN Retraining of Racehorses Championship class and there is plenty more happening so check back each day for quick updates plus our full Member-only reports and cross country videos coming up next week .....
