Burnham Market International is usually held over the Easter weekend but this year it runs the weekend prior so all activities will take place from Friday to Sunday instead of the usual Thursday to Saturday. Hopefully the Easter bunny will still ensure there are plenty of choccies and hot cross buns available at the Norfolk event that attracts a host of eventing stars
In 2018 the event had its first ever abandonment on the final day due to the ground conditions so many of the international classes didn’t get a run but 28 year old local rider Philippa and Scoop De Ferbert, who won the Intermediate Section J, had the biggest win of their career while Piggy French also had a good couple of days at the office before weather stopped play, winning the Advanced and an Intermediate section
It was very unusual for Burnham Market to be affected by wet weather as the cross country runs on well drained undulating farmland in a hilly part of Norfolk and every effort is made to ensure good going. Musketeer’s Alec Lochore designs the cross country course which is built by Mark Watler and Sue Peasley is the show jumping course designer
The main show jumping arena is located directly below the marquees and a grassy bank provides excellent spectator viewing over the arena and the cross country warm-up; for those looking for a little protection from the sea breeze, the Hospitality Marquee is the perfect place to stay warm whilst watching the action and enjoying lunch
The cross country course also offers great viewing spots for spectators and, although it is a bit of a walk up to the dressage arenas, it’s well worth it to watch the big guns ‘up close and personal’ as they start their season
Apart from the Hospitality Marquee, there are plenty of other food outlets at the event plus shopping opportunities and, for those young at heart, bungee trampolines, bouncy castles and a climbing wall provide entertainment of a different kind. Circus performers Razz and Pearl will be performing circus workshops, on Saturday 13th April and Sunday 14th April and, thanks to its location, even visiting royals and their children have been known to drop by, adding an extra ‘frisson’ of excitement to the bouncy castle
Barefoot Retreats Burnham Market International Horse Trials 2019 is part of The Tri Star Eventing Series that provides riders the opportunity to win exciting prizes in a series of accumulator leagues at Grass Roots, Novice, Intermediate levels and hosts the second leg of the 2019 TriStar Eventing Series £50,000 Grand Slam
