Chatsworth House and its Capability Brown designed parklands is one of the most jaw-droppingly gorgeous venues for eventing.
The annual event at the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire’s parkland at Chatsworth House near Bakewell, in Derbyshire takes place this year from Friday 10th to Sunday May 12th and is one of the most popular spectator events. This year there will be displays from the Barlow Red Barrows, have-a-go dog agility and a family fun dog show along with a shopping village of over 100 high-quality trade stands. The house, garden, farmyard and playground are also open as usual during the horse trials.
Ian Stark, a friend of the Duchess and five-time Olympian, is the cross country course designer for the CCI4*-S and Advanced cross-country course while David Evans, course-builder at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the forthcoming Tokyo 2020, will create the CCI2* and Novice tracks. All of the courses run over permanent grassland in Chatsworth Park and will run in the same direction this year as in 2018.
The courses include some well-known traditional feature fences such as Queen Mary’s Bower but there will be some new fences introduced in May and the National tracks will be a slightly modified version of the FEI ones in 2019. A great deal of work is done by the Chatsworth team to ensure the best possible going on the hilly courses where it is always difficult to make the time and the Advanced and International courses are designed as a strong preparation for forthcoming three day events.
The event also features the first leg of the Event Rider Masters Series and you can watch the stars of the future in the Dubarry Burghley Young Event Horse 4- and 5-year-old classes.
