The One Ashford Hospital Chilham Castle (1) Horse Trials is the Spring event hosted in the glorious Chilham Castle parkland designed by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown. Chilham Castle overlooks the eventing activities and the Kentish North Downs provide the backdrop, which is well worth the view even if you may be a bit puffed by the time you get to the top of the hill!
Your horse needs to be fit as there are some steepish hills but it is well worth the effort as the team at Chilham continue their long-term investment in land management and the development and maintenance of the cross country course designed by Scott Brickell. All courses make good use of the parkland and there have been changes for this season including new fences on all courses and the course running in reverse (clockwise) for first time since 2015.
The dressage takes place on the flattest part of the estate on well-established old turf set beside the beautiful lake and looking up at Chilham Castle. The area is very quiet with a huge warm-up space but is a short walk from the lorry park, so best to allow a few extra minutes.
The show jumping takes place in a spacious area just above the lorry park with another large warm-up area and the ground for all phases stands up well to wet weather which can happen in April!
It’s also worth setting aside a little time to wander into the picturesque village of Chilham with its pretty square and a couple of very decent pubs
