It was indeed a case of ‘Clever Louis’ at the SsangYong Blenheim Palace Horse Trials today when Chris Burton’s new ride won the CCI4*-S for eight- and nine-year-old horses. They finished on their dressage score of 29.7, well ahead of second placed Tom McEwen Riding Dreamaway on a score of 36.6.
The win by Chris and Clever Louis was made even more remarkable by the fact that this was their first ever competition together although Chris gives credit to his new training facilities at Lower Chapel Marsh Farm for enabling him to get a good feel for the horse before they came to Blenheim.
Chris went into today’s cross country in pole position after the equal overnight leader, William Fox-Pitt withdrew his horse Georgisaurous, as he hinted at in yesterday’s interview. Gemma Tattersall made a huge leap up the leader board into third place on Chilli Knight when they produced the only other double clear cross country ride of the class, moving up from 23rd after the first two phases
