“In my opinion, Kelsall Hill is one of the best one-day event courses I've seen in this country” says Oliver Townend. As a local rider from just over the border in Shropshire and a multi-winner at this venue, Britain’s number one eventer may be a little biased, but he may also have a point
The Kelsall Hill Equestrian Centre is located on over 350 acres of great riding country and is an equine oasis in the heart of beautiful Cheshire. The two British Eventing official events held here in April and September run over undulating ground, ideal for getting horses fit (Oliver’s comment came in September as part of his preparation for Boekelo) and the sandy soil makes the going good in most conditions, even after bad weather.
Last year Ros Canter bought Allstar B to Kelsall Hill in April as part of their preparation for Badminton and Yorkshire’s Nicola Wilson is a regular here too. But it isn’t all medallists and wold number ones at Kelsall with great facilities for everyone to enjoy the three days of eventing. Classes run from BE80 (T) up to Advanced Intermediate and the cross country courses, designed by Captain Mark Phillips and built by Dominic Lawrence, provide well-constructed, interesting fences (including the harmless but dramatic looking ski-jump) and a great water complex, perfect for spectators as well as good to ride at all levels
There is also usually a very good mobile bar but we’re still confused about the ‘Dog Beer’?? We’ll find out more this year
The site is easily accessible and parking is plentiful, with a concrete track running down to the main parking areas from the main entrance. The show jumping arena is centrally located with huge straw bales providing seating all around, surrounded by some very good watering and eating spots (try the Thai food – highly recommended, along with the French crepes or Cheshire pork pies)
The weather was fabulous last year so let’s keep our fingers crossed for April. Entries are now open and, if you haven’t been to Kelsall Hill before as a rider or spectator, we’d recommend it if you’re in that part of the world
