The Frenchfield Horse Trials was a new addition to the British Eventing calendar of events when it was launched in 2018 and this year it once again offers two events for northern competitors and visitors from the south

Riders, owners and spectators can enjoy stunning views across the Lake District at two events in April and September at Frenchfield Farm, which has excellent road links at Penrith, free draining sandy ground and undulating terrain.

Last year a considerable number of feature fences were constructed using the sandstone walls dividing the pastures and various timber fences in the hedge-lines and a new Novice level has been introduced for 2019. The Novice course will be contained to around 2500m with 27-28 jumping efforts and represent an appropriate first or second run at this level and ‘Harry the Hedgehog’ will be out of hibernation, with a new coat to feature in the Novice course in 2019.

Competitors in the Novice classes have the opportunity to qualify for their respective Novice regional finals (see Warwick Hall (2) on 15/16 June) and the BE100 and BE90 class are qualifiers for the Championship final at Badminton in 2020 while BE80 competitors can also qualify for a Regional final (see Frenchfield (2) 14/15 Sept) in preparation for the new Championship at Burghley in 2020.

There is also the introduction of a special BE90 Newcomers Section for any horse or rider who has competed in no more than four BE events.  Similarly, there will be a BE100 Newcomers Section for any horse or rider who has never competed at BE100 with competitors simply having to specify eligibility on the entry form.

The majority of the BE100 classes are held on the Saturday and the majority of BE90 sections are on Sunday; for those just looking to spectate and enjoy a day out in the Cumbrian countryside, it very affordable to visit – admission will be just £10 per car, allowing up to 4 occupants entry for the whole day and the same occupants may return for the second day for free.
